This Is Why You Must Not Tag All Outbound Links As Nofollow

Nofollow

John Mueller of Google clarified a common misconception about nofollow attributes. In a recent Google Webmaster Central hangout, he was asked about his thoughts on the usual practice by most SEO professionals and webmasters, wherein they tag all outbound links as nofollow. And the reason that they do this is to prevent link juice from leaking and thus avoid getting low rankings. Mueller outright said that this is wrong.

According to Mueller, tagging outbound links as nofollow does not have any impact on ranking at all or have any difference compared to websites that use normal links. He said that any website could eventually achieve better rankings, given that they are part of the normal web ecosystem.

Mueller stressed the fact that marking all outbound links as nofollow might cause problems in the long run as this is an unnatural practice of linking to web pages.

Moreover, Mueller explained that most SEO experts and website owners choose to tag all of their outbound links as nofollow to play safe since they do not know which specific ones to tag. However, he said that this should not be the case, and writers must be confident on what they are writing about and what exactly do they want to be indexed, most especially news publishers.
