Google’s John Mueller recently confirmed that SEO experts and site owners have nothing to worry about spammy backlinks. This is in response to a question about what to do with spammy links to websites and if they will harm the sites’ rankings.
According to Mueller, a website that has been around for a long time will probably have links from all kinds of places. He said that these spammy links are a normal part of the web, and is something that Google sees every single time. Furthermore, he also stated that as long as you’re aware of every activity happening on your site with regards to links, then you shouldn’t worry about it.
Meanwhile, with regards to the spammy links you can’t control, some might think that the only real thing to do is to disavow them. But since Mueller did not comment any further about this, it is still unclear if disavowing these paid links bought by a competitor is the right course of action.
At the same time, Mueller said that checking your site and spotting things that you need to clean up is never a bad idea. However, instead of being concerned about spammy backlinks alone, it’ll be a wiser move to also focus on on-page factors for you to know why a site isn’t ranking well.
