3 Things You Must Understand About Recovering From Ranking Losses In Broad Core Algorithm Updates

Broad Core Algorithm Updates

John Mueller of Google recently clarified a few points about Google core algorithm updates, a common topic most people in the SEO community asks about.

  1. They are not penalties

Ranking drops for penalties and broad core algorithm updates are similar but are not the same. Unlike for penalties where notices are sent out to users, ranking losses happen naturally. These are classified into two: Search Ranking Position Losses, which causes high-ranked pages to drop significantly; and the Complete Ranking Losses, which is more serious since this is when a website loses rankings completely.

  1. They are all about finding more relevant pages

Websites lose rankings during core updates because Google determines that other pages are much more relevant than those that are currently ranking. Therefore, it doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with a website that requires fixing but more of a change of calculation on Google’s part.

  1. No wait required to recover from ranking losses

With Google’s algorithm constantly updating, Mueller said that there is no need to wait for the next core update to recover from ranking losses. If there are changes implemented in a website, improvements should be noticeable after some time even without another core update being rolled out.

With all of these in mind, SEO experts and webmasters are encouraged to investigate the relevance factors if their websites lose rankings following broad core algorithm updates.
