This Is What You Should Do When Dealing With A Bad Domain History

Domain History

In a recent Google Webmaster Central hangout, a site owner was worried about the URL they took over with their brand. They discovered that the URL was actually used for piracy content a few years ago and has bad domain history. At the same time, upon checking at the Google transparency report, they saw that there’s plenty of trouble with that domain. So what should sites owners or SEO experts do about this kind of problem?

To answer that question, Google’s John Mueller stated that such problem should fix itself over time. However, that will still depend on the extent of the bad activity associated with the URL and how long it went on.

Mueller clarified that if you’re dealing with a domain that has a short period of bad activity then it’ll disappear on its own after some time. If that’s the case, it’s suggested to just focus on your business and move forward, or try to determine if it’s something to take action on. But if the domain has a great stretch of poor activity that went on for ten years or longer, then it’ll be better to acquire a new domain.

Lastly, for those who are also concerned about the URL they recently took over, Mueller recommends utilising Archive.org to check on the history of the domain.
