SEO professionals and webmasters should take note of Google’s current trial to completely remove URLs from the search results in favour of displaying the website name instead.
Since breadcrumbs was introduced a few months ago, Google has not been showing full URLs in the search results all the time. According to one Reddit user, this might not have any huge impact when it comes to SEO after all. With this change, the perception of users between traditional and modern top-level domains would be normalised. This is because they won’t base their decision to click links based on the perceived trustworthiness of the URL. New domains that are trying to get into a niche would greatly benefit from this.
On the other hand, there is also the concern that this may cause problems when it comes to confirming website legitimacy. One Reddit user said that the absence of URLs in the search results might bring a hard time to Google in identifying phishing websites that are trying to impersonate legitimate ones.
If this delivers negative results to the click-through rates of websites, then Google may not permanently stop showing URLs in the search results. However, this will still be determined through testing.
