- Splitting Websites
In the recent Google Webmaster Central hangout, a website owner asked for advice on how to smoothly split a site and move the SEO content from the old website to the new one. In response to this topic, John Mueller of Google explained that splitting or merging sites may result in unstable search rankings.
Mueller also revealed that it’s unrealistic to expect that the content will maintain its current rankings when moved to a new website. He even stated that site owners must be patient in monitoring search rankings as such changes can be hard to process. At the same time, it might need a bit of time or even months before the search rankings settle down following such changes.
So when it comes to splitting or merging sites as well as moving content, here are some advice from Mueller on what site owners or SEO experts can do. He said that it’s essential to have redirects set up for the web pages from the old site to the new one. Also, internal linking on the old and new site must also be taken care of.
