John Mueller talked about the best way to structure a website in the recent Google Webmaster Central hangout. He revealed that the number of slashes in the URL of a page doesn’t really matter if you want it to rank high in the search results. But instead, site owners and SEO specialists should pay attention to the click depth. This refers to the number of clicks needed to reach a particular page from the homepage.
Furthermore, Mueller added that a page would be given more weight in the search results if it’s just one click away from the homepage. This tells Google that such a page is important and highly relevant to the website. On the other hand, if it takes multiple clicks in order to reach a specific page, it will be considered less important. Because eventually, Google will take a look at how easy it is to find your page and its content.
So for both webmasters and SEO experts who want a particular page to rank higher than others, it is strongly recommended that you make it easily accessible from the homepage.
