This Is Why Singular And Plural Keywords Have Different Rankings

Singular And Plural Keywords

Most SEO experts recommend putting synonyms in contents such as the singular and plural versions of the keyphrases they’re targeting. With that in mind, Google’s John Mueller explains why it is better to pick whether to focus on singular or plural keywords since they aren’t always treated as synonyms and will get different rankings and search results.

According to him, this is caused by different user intents. Search queries can be unique from one another across all niches and topics. Because of this, it is impossible to generalise that all singular keywords have the same meaning as their plural counterparts. So when you try searching for singular or plural versions of a particular keyword, you will most likely find different results since they satisfy the query of most people who look up the same keywords.

However, it isn’t recommended to place tons of synonyms in a web page as this is a form of keyword spamming trick. That’s why user intent goes above other factors like ideal anchor text, keyword distribution, or inbound link patterns when Google ranks web pages.

Therefore, Mueller recommends that website owners and SEO experts should take note of what their audience is searching. This way, they can be more accurate in choosing keywords and determine whether singular or plural versions are better for their contents.
