SEOs and website owners have used keyword research to improve website SERP rankings since the beginning. At SMX East, however, Bing’s Frédéric Dubut recently claimed that this practice would soon become obsolete. He added that SEO experts would have to change their strategies in favour of intent research. When asked about this topic, Google’s John Mueller said that while intent research will indeed become more prominent, keywords are and will still be relevant.
Mueller agreed that search engines would keep improving when it comes to understanding user intent. However, he added that keyword research is still valuable since showing users specific words helps them understand a webpage’s content. Mueller also noted that this could even help websites with the conversion process. The Google webmaster trends analyst said search engines will get better at understanding more than the words on a webpage, but he doesn’t think keywords will go away any time soon.
In the future, SEO practitioners and site owners will have to adapt and focus more on understanding the intent of searchers. With keyword research here to stay for the foreseeable future, it’s only a question of how much of it will be done in relation to intent research.
