Google Plans To Block Push Notifications In Chrome 80

Chrome 80
Google will start blocking push notifications for websites in Chrome version 80. This version will do so for users who always choose to block push notifications, and lets users opt-in for push blocking. Chrome 80 will also automatically block push notifications for websites that have low opt-in rates. Google encourages SEO experts and website owners to be familiar with their best practices, so their push notifications won’t be blocked.

For Chrome 80, Google promised to penalise websites that use push notifications to deliver malware or ads. It also features a new Quiet UI, which informs users about blocked push notifications and lets them undo it.

To prevent push notification blocking, Google recommends that developers adopt two best practices in particular. First, developers should wait for users to see the benefits of notifications before asking for permission to receive them. Second, developers are advised to test their website’s permission request flow with Google’s quiet notification permission UI. They can enable it manually via Chrome’s settings.

Developers who would like to try out these new changes can download Chrome Canary, a version of Google Chrome that contains all the latest features. The release of Chrome 80 is set on 4 February 2020.
