- Server Migration
In the recent episode of #AskGoogleWebmasters, John Mueller was asked how to carry out a proper server migration without affecting search engine optimisation in a negative way.
It cannot be denied that doing a server migration is a pretty huge task, and it can be quite tedious when taking Google Search into consideration. Despite this, Mueller explains that a website migrated to a new server would not be treated differently by Google, provided that everything in it remains the same.
This is also true when preserving SEO, wherein the URLs, content, and CMS from the old server must all be transferred to the new one. By doing this, the result will be basically the same website but only hosted on a new IP address.
Nevertheless, one issue that could arise from doing server migration is in crawling. Googlebot may adjust its frequency of crawling such websites to prevent problems on the server caused by excessive crawling. When Google detects a server change in a website, they will throttle back their systems and ensure that the new server can handle Googlebot’s additional work. After some time, the crawl speed of Googlebot would go up again to reach a rate that is ideal to the server.
