Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Gary Illyes gave a keynote address at the recent Pubcon in Las Vegas. In his speech, he highlighted the most important things to keep in mind when it comes to search engine optimisation today. Here are some of them:
1. Always produce quality content. Illyes advises SEO experts and website owners to keep their contents clear as much as possible. It’s a good idea to read them out loud to assure that they can be easily understood and does not sound too unnatural.
2. Maintain a mobile-friendly website. Because Google is now prioritising mobile versions of websites when indexing, it is a must to start moving your websites to mobile-first indexing. If you don’t have a mobile version, your desktop site will be moved to mobile-first indexing instead, and this can lead to lower rankings.
3. Go HTPPS. Chrome is now prioritising HTTPs sites over HTTP ones, so it’s now the time to update websites. Going HTTPS also has a ranking boost, but Illyes explained that it’s more of a tiebreaker than anything between HTTPS and HTTPS websites.
4. Cut down unnecessary content. If you have billions of web pages, it can affect your crawl budget. That’s why you must examine each one and remove pages that are not valuable to your website to cut down your crawl budget.
